There are 4 20x26 spots available. Please only ask if you really need them to fit your trailer. If you are 1-2ft over that is fine, you don't need to be added to this list. If you have a large RV, there is a RV park close by.

1. Booties BBQ
2. Duelin J's
3. S'Mackdown Smoking Co
4.

What is the sampling setup for this event? Tickets like usual or are we providing them meat to sell for their charities?

You provide samples for free to public but they give you butts to cook for sampling. The organizer does it as a community charity and simply asks for donations from the public. It will all be gone quickly. This has huge numbers of people.

From the flyer:
We ask competitors that are willing, to
cook an extra 30-40lbs of pork that would
be provided, or whatever you can handle,
that would go towards the public sampling
effort

Will be happy to prep and cook additional pork for the charity. Are WE sampling that out or turning it over to the hosts to sample, as we do at Langley?

I don't see it on the flyer. So, I'll ask...are any Quiet Hours being enforced this year?

Either you can sample out the extra pork that you cook, or I think there is a meat pool that you can add it to.

Quiet hours are 10pm - 6am as per the schedule on the flyer. Yes I will enforce them because I am sleeping on site.

20x20 is the standard site size. There is power available, but you may need up to 75' of cord.

So I just got popped by the fire department for my smoker they say there is a stage 2 burn ban clean air effect on. If this doesn't get lifted does this effect pigfest?

I will keep everyone updated as I can.

The last information I received from the organizer was last night just before midnight - No problem for the competitors

Oak Harbor is in Island County, which is not affected by the burn ban that's getting all the news in Seattle. We're currently under a Stage 1 burn ban - no outdoor or recreational burning at all - in King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. A Stage 1 burn ban includes any kind of natural fuel with the exception of gas and certified wood stoves, so charcoal/wood/pellets... all currently banned in the aforementioned counties.

However, Island County is under a Stage 2 burn ban, which is:

quote:
Type II burn ban in effect on August 3rd, 2017
NO OUTDOOR BURNING OF NATURAL DEBRIS EVEN WITH A PERMIT. NO RECREATIONAL FIRES. The use of BBQ grills, propane or briquettes, or self-contained camp stoves are exempt from a this Type II Burn Ban.

So at least for the time being, the Oak Harbor Pigfest isn't a concern. I'm also researching what might happen if Island County is upgraded to Stage 1, but my current understanding is that businesses and events are exempt.

I've now talked to Island County Health, the Island County Sheriff's Department, and the Oak Harbor Police Department. I made them all aware that I was calling on behalf of the PNWBA as a member of the Board of Directors so that my questions would be given due consideration. (Island County Health tried to wave me off as a non-issue.) Apparently no one had even considered these questions until I called, though I assume that the greater Pigfest organizers have been keeping track of the ban.

Island County Health had no idea what would happen and said that the burn bans are instigated and controlled by the Sheriff. So they forwarded me.

The Island County Sheriff's Department said that they hadn't considered something like that, but that since the event is within the city limits of Oak Harbor that I'd need to talk to the Oak Harbor Police Department. So they forwarded me to the dispatcher, who put in a detailed request for a callback from an officer.

I'm currently waiting for the callback and will update once I have more information.

I received a call back from Mike with the Oak Harbor Fire Department. He said that there's no concern for the Pigfest and related events. If the burn ban is upgraded to Stage 1 they will deal with it at the city level and that the event will go on as planned. They're not going to cancel this large of an event at the last minute without a dire emergency.

He also told me that it's actually pretty common for there to be a Stage 2 burn ban this time of year, and that we've probably had them in past years and just didn't know it. The B.C. wildfires are giving air quality a lot of publicity that it normally doesn't get, so that's been causing a lot of questions that most people never even think to ask.

The Fire Department's main concern, as always, is an actual fire but since we're on a paved street and have always been good in the past they're not too worried about it. Just their usual vigilance.
