10 of 14 members present for a quorum.

The President called the meeting to order at 6:32 pm.

    Agenda

Kris Hollis asked to give the board a member presentation. He discussed the premise of not sanctioning lite cooks. He said that while lite cooks grow the sport and teams (like face the judges in Vancouver), they are not fair to the experienced pro teams as they end up being potential Jack qualifiers. He feels that there is not as much challenge to a typical tri-tip, chicken, and ribs lite competition and that it can take away a Jack bung from a more experienced team doing more rigorous 4 meat competitions. He also suggested that a lite competition would be better with brisket, chicken, and ribs.

Board discussion regarding Kris' presentation: Concern about why experienced teams prefer not to do lite cooks. The idea that anyone can go compete and get a bung is something that is appealing. We will look at whether to remove the tri-tip and replace it with hot and fast brisket. The board decided to table that discussion for now and look at each sanctioning application and give due consideration based on our members and the organizer. Possible poll of our pitmaster members. In any case, the Jack makes the rules about what events qualify for a bung, not PNWBA.

    Approve minutes
Motion to approve the minutes from the March call-in meeting was approved. Steve will post the March Minutes to the forum.

    Treasurer's Report/Update
Lance presented the financial reports. P&L included Back to Basics and part of Sweet Home income. The balance sheet was relatively on par with normal and Finance Committee reviewed and approved it. Motion to approve passed.

    Committee Reports:

    Events Committee:

Bill: BC Backyard BBQ – This year, Covid-Q Replaces April for April. No HJ in Canada. PNWBA or judges has not charged sanctioning fees in the past due to the charity nature of the event. It may turn out to be the only event in Canada this year. Charity: Agriculture for Autism. 6/26 is their first choice but that is the Redmond weekend. Consider 7/10 as that is open. Board sanctioned the event.

Lance – postmortem on Back to Basics financials. We tried to make the event revenue-neutral but took a very small loss and we bought insurance. Loss of less than $300. Board agreed that it was good for PNWBA to back this event.

Skykomish – James Jones. 3 meat 1-day lite competition. Tunnel Days has been going on for 40-50 years and they approached James to do BBQ at the depot. They liked the idea of a comp. 6/19. A week before Redmond. Financially, he is looking for something similar to Saffron’s event. Not mandatory that teams sample. The restaurant has room for 18 teams max. 3 meats – chicken, ribs, and tri-tip. 2,500 prize pool? Sanction via email once financial figures can be totaled. (Sanctioned via email.)

Famous Dave's event in Everett. Sanctioned via email. 1-day event on Sunday 8/29. 3 meat event, Brisket, Chicken, and Ribs.

    New business

Discussed modifying the NW Championship Rules – GC of events gets entry into this. So far Jason Bauer and Tom Dryer have qualified. This year only proposed allowing lite cook winners to enter. Motion approved.

Spokane event fully sanctioned based on 9/25 date. 1-day comp, but open to 2-day in the future.

Wild Apricot – Our registration/communication system has increased fees – If we prepay for 2 years it will significantly reduce costs. Motion to prepay passed.

    Old business:
Sweet Home event recap – table for next meeting.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was passed at 8:10 pm.

The next board meeting will be on May 26, 2021, at 6:30 pm.
