BIG SMOKE IN LITTLE KALAMA

This a a fully sanctioned traditional 4 meat PNWBA BBQ event, returning for its 3rd year to the beautiful Haydu Park in Kalama, Washington. Total Purse has increased to $10,000 for 2024. Additional monies will be awarded to People's Choice for vending ($300) plus the Anything Hamburger competition (separate registration).
The venue is very family friendly, with large grassy areas, kids activiites, music and entertainment, Wine and Beer Garden, and live BBQ demonstations by Misty Banchero, Seattle Butcher's Wife.
Load in begins on Friday, Saturday is reserved for vending samples to the public plus an Anything Burger competition for Kids (6-10, Juniors 11-15. and Adults 16 and over). Anything Burger Awards are at 6:00pm.
Sunday is for the BBQ competition and for teams that want to vend their leftover meat to the public. BBQ Awards will take place around 5pm on the center stage.
We are looking for BBQ teams that would host and/or mentor some Kids teams for the Anything Burger event. This could include making cooking resources available for them to produce their entry, giving them tips on preparation, cooking, and presentation, and being a cheerleader. Contact either Rose Scattergood or Dale Groetsema if interested in helping.
QUALIFIER? - This should be a Jack and American Royal qualifier if we have at least 25 teams turning in ALL entries.

Turn-In Times Saturday 4/29:
Kids (ages 6-10 years) 3:00 pm
Junior (11-15 years) 3:30 pm
Adults (16 years and over) 4:00 pm
Rules for Anything Burger:
- All contestants will provide their own buns, condiments, cheese and any other toppings they desire.
- Open garnish with sturdy entry tray/platter limited to 20” x 20”. No live animals, fire or tippy (you will have to carry entry across a very crowded venue) presentations allowed. Skewers, toothpicks are allowed but must be visible.
- While you are required to turn in at least two complete burgers, we recommend you submit at least one cut in half for appearance. The turn in team will cut your whole or half burger if needed to make the required 6 portions.
- Fuel for cooking is limited to charcoal, wood pellets, or wood. No propane or electric allowed.
- For Kids and Junior brackets, minimal assistance from adults but at least one adult must be present during cooking process.
- Entries are not guaranteed to be served in order of arrival at the turn-in table. If your entry requires it to remain at a constant temperature (heat or cold) during the judging process, that source must be provided by you and must not interfere with showing and serving of the entry. Suggested source for heat would be hot pack or similar and suggested source for cold would be dry ice or cold pack.
People's Choice Award:
$300 and bragging rights.
Special Notes to Teams
Any team requiring more than 20 amps need to bring their own QUIET generator.

Sampling Details:
On Saturday, vending BBQ samples are mandatory for all teams. On Sunday, vending your leftover competition meats is strongly encouraged for all teams. Samples should consist of 2 oz or 4 oz samples. Selling full plates is discouraged.
Sampling is mandatory on Saturday as it helps fund future competitions and that is what the public is really wanting to do at a BBQ competition. We want visitors to drop tokens with several different teams and be able to vote on "People's Choice".
Sampling hours:
Saturday, June 29th, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.
Sunday, June 30th, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Sampling split with the event: 75%/25% with 75% going to the teams and 25% to the event.

Tokens are being sold for $3 each.
2 oz samples = 1 token
4 oz samples = 2 tokens
1 Rib - 2 tokens
1 Chicken Leg or Thigh = 2 tokens
This year the event will keep 25% of the vending sales in order to fund future competitions. Your check will be mailed out on Tuesday, July 2nd. The split if 75/25 with 75 going to the teams. Food samples should be 2 ounces for $3.00 (one token) and 4 oz for $6.00 maximum (2 tokens). Teams must have at least one member with a valid Washington State Health Card. Teams selling samples are required to have a dedicated person available to sell samples even during turn-in times. The event is selling tokens for this event. Please have a container available to hold them in. Handwritten signs are allowed.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS:
The local health department has agreed to use the forms from Tacoma-Pierce County (same as used at Spring Fair). You will receive one by email once you have registered for the event. Fill out the Health Department menu declaration and signature of head cook IF vending/sampling. Teams must have at least one member with a valid Washington State Health card.

Note that turn-in window is different for those who have competed in SCA events and turn-in order may be different than other competitive BBQ organizations.
Team Requirements:

Entry Fee:
Entry fee is $195.00 USD and is non-refundable. In the event of a cancellation by the event coordinator, $182.50 will be refunded from the entrant’s payment. Regardless of the situation, a designated amount of $12.50 from the entry fee is non-refundable to cover payment and event processing expenses.
Entry Payment Due:
Entry fees must be paid at the time of registration.

Power - Teams mus bring their own extension cord and is limited to 20 amps.. The event should have enough power for all, but it is suggested that you bring a quiet power generator as a backup.
