Committee Reports:
Events – Bill S.
There was a discussion about the proposed contest in Grandview, WA in August, during the Yakima Valley Fair and Rodeo. There was a discussion around trying to use the event as a training/judging/demonstration class, but there is not enough time to coordinate all the things necessary to make it happen. The board declined the application for sanctioning for the Grandview contest this year and will work with the organizer to begin the planning process for an event next year, earlier in 2024.
Prosser, WA contest went off well, and the organizers were happy.
Kalama, WA contest had some issues around the sampling times and expectations. The sampling should end at 4:30, before the awards. The contest organizer needs to communicate that the teams will be paid for the sampling money after the contest is over by check in the mail.
Sutherlin, OR – the contest is upcoming and should be 25 teams, (although not necessary to make a qualifier, since it is a first-year contest), and the organizer has put in a lot of effort to recruit teams. It will be a heavy sampling event, with a lot of public expected to show up. There has been radio and TV advertising for the event. There is a shortage of judges registered to judge, so there will be a class in the morning to train some local people to do the judging for the contest.
Training – Karen S.
The judging committee met and set a date of Saturday, October 14, 2023, in Pendleton, OR for a judging and pitmaster class at the rodeo grounds or at the Chamber of Commerce.
